design contests are perfect for small businesses
As a small business owner I think that sites like 99designs are the perfect solution for me when I need a logo for a new company. I'm not starting fortune 500 companies and I don't have several thousand dollars to give a designer whose work I may not even like when I could give a hundred dollars and see over 50 designs. It's just common sense.

It doesn't matter if you had a website that gave away free money to who ever asked for it, there will always be some asshat who will bitch about it.

Yes, Mr. Mouse, brilliant observation. It stands to reason that the person whose money is being given away for free would be apt to complain.

What if your house was on the market, and all of your neighbors who also had homes on the market decided to allow one buyer to have unlimited access to all of the houses on your street for free, and in addition they could own one house, for pennies on the dollar compared to the price of your house? You might squeak, too.

If you concerned about a designers work, check out the designer's portfolio first! It's not hard to get a little legwork for better results. The issue you are going to have is branding consistency. If you hire a designer that you research and know their capabilities, that can translate into additional AND cohesive work in print and web media. If you aren't willing to spend money on your own image, it says a lot on how serious you are on the business success.

An asset for both designers and clients, but not a replacement for what has come before
As founder of eLogoContest I obviously think that design contests and spec work are an asset to both the design and business community. At the same time, as a designer

anti spec work - pro design contests
I am all about design contests, but I never take on spec work one on one with a client. I also never participate in design contests where the money isn't
