Spec Work Is Destroying the industry
Spec work is a joke, design contests are not in any way a legitimate way for a company to develop a brand. Are they going to start selling logos at McDonalds next?

From what I can see in the last month many so called "non designers" as you call them are naking some good logos.

I agree that spec work can be dangerous, and does not respect the value presented by a professional designer.

I chose my words carefully. "Can be" because many business ventures are hobbies, doomed to failure, or generally practice abusive procurement policies anyway. This is the typical "I'll know it when I see it" crowd. They may not understand (or care) what a logo can do for a business, how it can be misinterpreted, or what it means to have extensibility in a design. For these folks, a design contest provides a good answer. This business segment exists, it needs a solution, and you just need to decide if you want to play here or not.

My other qualifier is "professional designer"- if you don't understand these issues yourself, cannot advise a company beyond the artistic component, you don't understand trademarks and infringement, you regenerate the same ideas or copy other artist's work, then you are not a part of the solution. Yet.

Those of you who are complaining/grumbling are missing something important here, and I think bkrueger hit the nail on the head by saying that a market for this exists - and I will tell you why.

If I am launching a new business, I have to spend my set up funds carefully. I do not have the time or inclination to find and deal with a creative design agency. Whilst I have no doubt that moving forward I need to do that at some point - because I understand they offer so much more than just a "logo", during set up, I simply do not have the funds or time to allocate to such a project.

I build and sell businesses, I build them as cheaply as possibly, and it is only during the "growth" phase that I invest in quality creative design.

In the interim, hatchwise offers me a quick, cost effective and reasonable quality solution.

If you are a big time designer, what can I say? Your sense of eliteism means you have missed the boat - there is a market for this quick, cheap service and hatchwise has offered a solution.

Sometimes we need a nice, clean and simple logo, fast, cheap and hassle free. Design agencies just don't offer that.

The Real Reason Why Crowdsourcing is Evil (for both sides)
The main reason that crowdsourcing is evil is the same reason that it's successful, Ideas. As all these ideas are propagated around these sites, it's just a matter of time

If “cheap” is your overriding purpose and primary objective, beware.
A question for the would-be contest holder: If you were not allowed to utilize elogodesign.com unless your company agreed to work with your customers for the same terms as set

Only for amateurs and children
No reputable designer is going to do work for free. The only "designer" who will do work for free is the one who is either not talented enough to get
